Beautiful, Fragrant Ohio Lavender Farms

Jodi Bird Ohio Lavender Farms

Ohio Lavender farms are bountiful, varied and oh, so fragrant. Many of them are close together so you can visit more than one in a day if you so desire. Each farm offers its own personality, reflective of the people who run the farm. A friend and I took a day visiting three of Ohio’s lavender farms and it was a great learning experience.

Visiting Ohio Lavender Farms

Uniqueness is my favorite thing about visiting personally run businesses. When you’re able to sit down with the owners and hear their story, the connection between the person and the product becomes stronger.

My hope is that by giving you information on the various farms, you too will plan a trip and support these small business owners. Farming has been the thread of America since its beginning. It’s a love of the land and its potential that keeps this dream alive.

The first round of blossoms are finishing up but a second wave will bloom again in September. If you plan to visit these farms for the U-Pick option, be sure to call or check their Facebook page ahead of time.

Sunset Ridge Lavender Farm

The first thing you see when you pull into the driveway at Sunset Ridge Lavender Farm is an amazing purple barn. It holds the WOW factor with boldness and grace. This Amish built hickory barn was constructed in 2017 with no nails, only pegs. The craftsmanship is superb, as you can imagine. The large front porch invites you to sit for a spell and enjoy the beautiful lavender field located just up the hill. The color used on the barn is called ‘Just a Fairytale’ and that in itself captures the essence of the owners, their farm and their story.

Various varieties of lavender are grown. You will see subtle French lavender, brightly colored English lavender and even rows of white blossoms. Because this farm has such a large field of bright, English lavender blooms, it makes a great destination for photography. The farm recently had an engagement session which I’m sure was stunning. If you would like to arrange a session, please contact the owners before arriving.

Volunteer opportunity

All the lavender has to be cut by hand. It is quite a task because of the volume and the short harvesting window. If you would like to work in the lavender fields for a day, a bartering system is set up. You will be compensated with a beautiful bouquet of lavender and the opportunity to say you’ve worked in a lavender field.

Brandeberry Winery is located just a few hundred yards away. They offer a lavender wine made from their neighbors’ lavender along with many others. I love when small businesses form partnerships like this to make both entities stronger.

One-derings Lavender Farm

Pack a picnic and plan to spend a relaxing afternoon among the lavender plants at One-derings Lavender Farm. You can pick a favorite spot under the shade trees and enjoy the relaxing scent in this lavender park-like setting.

Started by two sisters who have a love of horticulture and chemistry, they have taken their knowledge and created something wonderful for all to enjoy. Their horticultural love shines through with the educational signs that are placed along the boardwalk. You will learn about different aspects of lavender such as its history, its benefits and how it is grown.

After running multiple experiments, these two chemists were able to come up with multiple products to utilize the lavender. Lavender bug spray, face cream and misting pillow spray are their most popular. All their products can be purchased at the farm and online with free shipping to many states.

One-derings offers a U-Pick option. You can choose to pick a small bouquet of around 50 stems or you can pay by the pound. There are about 350-450 stems per pound.

They also have a small herb garden that is gown for pleasure. The herbs are free to anyone who stops by and can use them. A free will donation box is available.

The Lavender Lover’s Handbook: The 100 Most Beautiful and Fragrant Varieties for Growing, Crafting and Cooking was highly recommended for additional information regarding all things lavender.

Peaceful Acres Lavender Farm

This Ohio lavender farm is located just a few minutes away from One-derings. All lavender is raised 100% organically. They too offer various lavender products which are sold in a small gift shop. They also have small bunches of dried lavender for sale.

Peaceful Acres offers a U-Pick throughout their fields. You can pick either a bouquet or a pail full.

Fun Surprises

Our Ohio lavender farm visits were complemented by visiting these additional destinations. One of my favorite things about travel is that you can plan your overall trip, but surprises always present themselves. This trip was a prime example of just that.

Hartman Rock Garden

The Hartman Rock Garden is in a quiet neighborhood as it was originally the home of Ben Hartman and his family. During the Depression, to keep himself busy after losing his job, he started to build with small stones. His imagination, tenacity and workmanship have fortunately been preserved for the public to see. A huge castle, drawbridge and all, along with small homes, churches, and historical scenes are showcased throughout the yard. Admission is FREE. If you have small children with you, they can grab a brochure and play a version of I Spy.

Yellow Springs

This town makes a great place to walk around and pop into the small shops and grab a bite to eat. A very eclectic town with a lot of character. There is a neat fairy garden mural on the side of the Fairy Garden shop, a bookstore down a tiny alley and many other businesses to check out.

Other places we came across included beautiful English barns, an octagon shaped barn, the County Courthouses for both Greene County and Clinton County, and a huge mural in Wilmington depicting American farming. There was also a splash pad in Wilmington for kids to enjoy on a hot day.

Support Small Businesses

2020 may be the year to really focus on how we spend our money. Are we supporting the big box stores or are we supporting the Mom ‘n Pop shops that are woven into our small towns and communities. My personal goal is to think about where the product came from and who it’s benefitting. Whether you’re enjoying a country drive to get to an Ohio lavender farm or surfing their website, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the end product.

Many passions fill my life but my family, friends and travel top the list by far. Combining them, or at least two of the three, makes it even better! I love being home and working in my garden but the urge to see and experience something new is always bubbling to the top. I love the researching part of planning a trip almost as much as the actual experience. I also like the challenge of seeing what kind of deals I can get so money is left over for even more trips!
