Tuscarawas County: Kindness that Created Legacies

During my visit to Tuscarawas County I kept experiencing an underlying theme; small acts of kindness and inquiries planted the seed for future endeavors. Many of the museums I visited started because of an interest or a gift. These people didn’t start out thinking they were going to collect something, it just turned out that way. It caused me to think about how much of an impact each kind gesture can be in a person’s life.

Along with amazing museums and fascinating stories, Tuscarawas County is bursting with savory dishes, drinks and desserts, excellent places to learn about Ohio history and magnificent railroad experiences. Small towns throughout the county are full of life and brimming to the edge, just waiting for you to enjoy their bounty.

When you stop in these restaurants, museums and specialty shops, be sure to tell them Jodi from Bountiful Blessings said, “Hi.” They all contributed their time to show me around and give me a warm, Tuscarawas County welcome.

Railroad Enthusiasts

Dennison Railroad Depot Museum

A sandwich, a cookie, a cup of coffee. These items seem simple to us now, but as a young man going off to fight in WWII, they meant so much more. Dennison was a water stop for the steam trains transporting troops to the east. 17 tracks merged at the depot creating quite the hub for activity. The Salvation Army Servicemen’s Canteen set up outside the Dennison Depot to make sure these men received a little something extra for their stomach and their soul. Food, smiles and service was provided for over 1.3 million soldiers from 1942-46 by 4000+ volunteers, mostly women.

Because of this friendly war effort, which meant so much to these young men, Dennison became better known as ‘Dreamville, USA’. Now, you can walk through this depot and relive what it was like during that time by browsing through this amazing museum’s display of artifacts, letters and photos. There is an fantastic model of the town and station showing the two roundhouses that once stood nearby.

Kids will absolutely love this museum as it has so many hands-on features. There are multiple rooms set up with different themes for kids to explore. Along the way, kids can take part in a treasure hunt to help find Bing, the depot’s mascot. Once they’ve made their way to the end, they will receive a charm to add to their dog tag.

The museum encompasses both the depot and on into multiple train cars. One of those cars includes a medic car, which is very rare to come by. Another car’s display is always changing. This year’s theme is Swing: Music of the 40s. The entire museum is meticulously created for a great experience, young and old alike.

Over the Rails Diner

Conveniently located inside the depot, Over the Rails Diner has been a local staple for years. Homemade specials and desserts are available for lunch and dinner. Friday nights offer an all-you-can-eat fish dinner that locals rave about.

Something new and delicious that I recommend trying are the pasta bites. A slice of pasta breaded and fried to perfection, served with marinara sauce. They are SO good!

Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum

Stepping onto the grounds of the roundhouse is like seeing Thomas the Train and all his friends in real life. If you love trains, you have to visit. If you don’t love train, you have to visit. Either way, you will leave with a whole new appreciation for these work horses. Mammoth in size, with wheels up to 73” in diameter, these black beauties are parked inside the recently built roundhouse for all to admire and learn about. Using over 500,000 locally made bricks, Jerry Joe Jacobson created an astounding replica, smoke jacks and all, of the roundhouses that used to sit all over the country. 23 engines are on display. Some include the exceedingly rare camelback (1 of 3 in America), Little 14 (a tank engine like Thomas), and the #763 which is the longest at 101’.

The tour takes about 1 ½ hours and is extremely comprehensive. You’ll learn about each engine’s history, how the engines are maintained and what’s in store for the future. Just to be able to walk through this architectural beauty is a destination in itself.

Fort Laurens Museum

Ohio may not have played a huge role in the Revolutionary War, but it wasn’t completely off the radar. Fort Laurens was specifically built as a base camp during this major conflict. Although the fort is now gone, the current museum is a wealth of information about the fort and those who served during that time. When you visit Fort Laurens, you might also want to stop by the Unknown Patriots Tomb to pay your respects.

The Ohio & Erie Canal towpath trail is easily accessible from the Fort Lauren’s parking lot. This is a great path for hiking and biking. It also allows you the chance to see some of the locks that would have been used during the canal days.

Historic Schoenbrunn Village

Picture a time of wilderness in Ohio. A time when the woods were dense and roads were scarce. This is precisely what it was like when Schoenbrunn Village was first settled. In 1772, this missionary community built log homes for its residence and they also provided ‘hotel lodging’ for pioneers traveling through the Northwest Territory. This would have been the location for (what would become) Ohio’s first school and first church.

The village was abandoned and practically lost, but it has been brought back to what preservationist feel is close to original stature. 17 log cabins make up the community and each stop on the tour has its own unique story to tell. This is an excellent destination to help kids learn about Ohio pioneer life.

Volunteer Opportunity: Schoenbrunn Village is always in need of volunteers to help clean the cabins, help with yard work, stock wood for the fireplaces and random other jobs, depending on the upcoming events.

Historic Zoar Village

A visit to Zoar’s historical village will give you phenomenal insight into what life was like in a communal community during the 1800s. This well-preserved town has a fascinating history and fortunately was restored in the 1950s to its original beauty. A society that sought peace, and did not want to involve themselves in Europe’s army, made their way across the Atlantic to settle here in Ohio. Working together, the Zoarites became very prosperous and were very inventive. Wintering citrus plants in the greenhouse for the folks living near Lake Erie shows one example.

Each family was responsible for their personal contribution, so if you ran the bakery, you would bake the bread for everyone. The families would arrive each day to pick up their loaves in their numbered towels. The same concept applied for milk, cheese, laundry and so on.

Throughout the walking tour, you will get to see the springhouse, the washhouse, the garden, the greenhouse, the bakery and much more. This is an excellent destination for kids learning about Ohio history.

Collections and Contributions

Alpine Hills Museum

The Alpine Museum is located in one of the adorable Swiss accented buildings in downtown Sugarcreek. Throughout the museum you will see excellent displays depicting life as the Swiss immigrants would have lived when they first came to America. It’s a great educational experience regarding customs and culture for both Swiss and Ohio history.

Auman Museum of Radio and Television

In 1951, Larry Auman had no idea that his interest in this crazy contraption called a television would lead to today’s unbelievable collection. Inside the Radio and TV Museum, you will see over 60 brands of TVs in every size, shape and style imaginable. They are neatly displayed among radios, games and toys of the given era. It’s a walk down memory lane for some and an education in entertainment for others.

Collectors Decanters and Steins

When a friend handed Levon a decanter in 1991, he never imagined he would one day own and operate a decanters and stein museum and store. As chance would have it, this is exactly what happened, and then some.

Over 3000 decanters from over 80 distilleries line the glass cabinets in the back of the Decanters and Steins Museum. You might think you’ve seen a lot when you first walk in the store, but it’s only the beginning. There are novelty decanters and steins for practically every interest. Some are pretty common and others, such as the fox lying in the log, are extremely rare. It’s definitely worth the stop to see.

Ernest Warther Museum & Gardens

Ernest had no idea when he was five years old that finding a pocketknife on the ground would project his life into a phenomenal lifetime of carving. And that carved set of pliers a hobo gave him was, in its own way, just as impactful. The same goes for the button jars that friends gave Frieda as they let go of old customs when moving to the new country of America.

The Warther Museum will inspire and awe you over and over and in so many ways. The button collection in the little cottage with its precision and creativity, similar to the arrowhead display, is truly amazing. From there, you will walk through the museum and see one carving after another made by the master carver himself. The love and commitment that this couple had, not just their work, but for their family, is absolutely touching.

Toland-Herzig Famous Endings Funeral Collection

Here is yet again an example of someone’s interest leading to something so much bigger than he ever imagined. John Herzig runs a funeral home and in doing so he has had the privilege of hearing numerous life stories of those who have passed. He started collecting autographs in the late 1980s and later it merged into a collection of funeral programs. Inspired to share stories from those who have made a positive impact in the world, John created an astonishing memorial/museum giving honor to those who left this world a better place.

The wall showcases those who are world famous such as Ronald Reagan and Steve Jobs, those whose name might not be known, but their contribution is widely known (Solo cup, frisbee, nerf football) and also those who were well known within their respective communities. The room is covered with actors, presidents, space figures, religious leaders, philanthropists, artists, world leaders, inventors and civil rights leaders.

The collection is tastefully spilling into other rooms with showcases and shadow boxes full of personal memorabilia. It’s quite a sight!

Norma Johnson Preserve

Getting in a short hike while on vacation is always a bonus. The NJP offers many trails through the prairie and on into the woods. There is a nice sized pond to enjoy along the way. Kids can learn firsthand how suspension bridges work and have fun in the lean-to fort.

A bird watch count can be downloaded, and you can help local naturalist keep tabs on local wildlife. This is a great place to have a picnic with all of the cheese, wine and snacks you’ll probably acquire while in the area. A large pavilion and multiple picnic tables are available by the parking lot.

Reeves Victorian Home and Carriage House Museum

This amazing, turn of the 20th century Victorian home is quite a sight. A guided tour will take you through the three-story home, ending in the ballroom. Furnished with over 90% of the original furniture, this Victorian home in like turning back the clocks. The guide will also give background information about the Reeves family and their positive impact on the community.

The carriage house is quite stunning as well. Inside, you will find the family car, buggy and other large items that have been preserved. Upstairs, there is an excellent display depicting the canal that allowed this area to become so prosperous. This is another great stop for Ohio history education.

Food & Drink in Tuscarawas County

Craft Bistro & Lounge

Phenomenal food, great service and an amazing view of New Philadelphia from the second story window equals a great evening of dining. Chef Eric crafts each entrée with exquisite precision and love, much like what the restaurant itself stands for. Craft isn’t only the namesake, it also extends into the finely crafted beer, wines and desserts that collaborate on the menu to pay homage to Ohio’s culinary experts.

Whether you’re looking to have a gourmet burger and beer with some friends or celebrating a special night out, Craft Bistro has a menu item that will blend nicely with your outing. Although the decision is VERY hard after sampling Eric’s best, I would have to say the scallops and the crème brulee top my list for personal favorites.

Daily Grind

I love this play on words. The Daily Grind vintage coffee shop is quaint and cozy both inside and out. You can belly up to the old soda bar, enjoy your coffee by the retro kitchen appliances or indulge in a seasonal flavored scone al fresco.

Eiler Candy Shop

There is something so nostalgic about walking into a small-town candy shop that has been around for decades. The long, soda fountain counter is like the cherry on top.

As you can imagine, the choices are bountiful. While I was debating, the lady behind the counter told me that when George Bush stopped in, he chose the chocolate covered marshmallow (among other treats). With that being said, my decision was made. Oh! My! The marshmallow is made in house, as well as the chocolate, and it was apparent from the first bite. A word to the wise: Buy more than one.

Dutch Valley Restaurant & Bakery

The Dutch Valley Restaurant has been a community staple for great food and service since the 1970s. Delicious, homemade food is their specialty. I have to say, their mashed sweet potatoes are the best I’ve ever tasted.

This family owned business has expanded to now include a spectacular inn, an extensive market, a gift shop and a newly built theatre. The campus offers various, fun, seasonal activities for those who stay at the Inn. There is playground area as well as a little village of adorable tiny buildings for kids to play in.

Fun fact: The waitress who tended to our table has worked at Dutch Valley Restaurant for 46 years! That’s a testament to the owners and staff.

Pointe Dining

When a restaurant stays in business for 20+ years, you know it’s doing something right. Patty, the owner, gives much of her success to her loyal employees who have been with her for many of those years. Consistent chefs in the kitchen and wait staff serving the dining area are important, but little touches, like the friendly greeting you’ll receive from Patty as you walk in the door, go a long way. Consistently having a delicious meal is important to locals and that’s exactly what keeps them coming back time and again.

Patty’s artistic abilities shine bright with her artwork that accentuate the walls throughout the restaurant. Her creative spirit also carries through to the patio seating area out back. This cozy oasis can be enjoyed among the heat lamps throughout the autumn season.

I ordered the Lemon Brie Chicken and every bite was fantastic and full of flavor. Tender chicken, fresh ingredients and just the right amount of seasoning to blend it all together.

School House Winery

Just like the name states, this winery is in an old schoolhouse with picturesque seating outside as well. Who doesn’t get a kick out of drinking in school? Fun, school related wine names add to the theme.

Simply Cinnamon Café

Located just down the road from the Historic Zoar Village, Simply Cinnamon makes a great stop for coffee and breakfast (pastries, quiche, bagels, sandwiches) before visiting or a smoothie and lunch (soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps) afterwards.

With 16 flavors of smoothies, it’s no easy decision. I opted for the orange creamsicle and it was like reliving my childhood summers all over again. Delicious!

Sublime Smoke

Sublime Smoke is located in the quaint little town of Bolivar, just a few miles from the Historic Zoar Village. This upbeat restaurant specializes in all things BBQ and craft beer. Have you ever had loaded baked beans? They are offered as a side, but they are so good I could eat a whole bowl as a meal. Indoor seating as well as multiple picnic tables under an outdoor pavilion are available.

Wallhouse Coffee

Wallhouse Coffee is a locally owned restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have an extensive menu, along with offering freshly roasted coffee beans.

As you can see in the picture, my banana crepes were served picture perfect and tasted oh, so good. A large latte is just that and more- it’s huge! Wallhouse offers several signature creations that are just as fun to eat as they are to watch being made. I chose the Carmel Coffee (Heath, Fresh Shot of Espresso, Caramel Sauce) and it was divine. The next time I visit I think I will opt for the Mocha Monkey (Brownies, Reese’s Cup, Fresh Shot of Espresso).

Cuckoo Clock

World’s largest cuckoo clock. Chimes every half hour. Sugarcreek

Cy Young and Woody Hayes

Cy Young and Woody Hayes both have their roots linked to Tuscarawas County. There is a nice memorial at the edge of town. The Historical Museum features a bronze statue of Hayes and additional information on both legends. New Comerstown, Ohio

Cy is buried at the New Peoli Cemetery, Port Washington. His headstone is near the road, close to the church.

Brick Murals

Located across the street from the cuckoo clock along the parking lot wall. Sugarcreek

Painted Murals

The murals are located all over town in both New Philadelphia and Sugarcreek. Several in Sugarcreek have moving parts, such as a train that runs across it.

Tuscora Park

Walking through this park made me feel like I was back in the 1920s where community, families and friendships were king. Even though much of the park is shut down due to COVID -19, many still gather to reap the benefits New Philadelphia has laid out to enjoy. This park offers what many others offer: a pond, a gazebo, ball diamonds, and a playground. Additional features that make Tuscora Park so cool include an amphitheater, an antique carousel, bocce courts, batting cages, a ferris wheel, multiple kiddie rides (including a large train), and a very large train playground. The place is quite a treasure!

Visiting Tuscarawas County will take you back in time and allow you to revel at how far we’ve come. It will give you time to relax and take in the culinary flavors we so often speed through. At the very least, your visit will fill your mind with a wealth of information. And who knows, maybe a random act of kindness will lead to something beyond your wildest dreams.

I would like to give a special thanks to the Tuscarawas County Visitors Bureau for hosting my visit. A huge thank you goes out to each and every business owner who took the time to make my visit so memorable. Many passions fill my life but my family, friends and travel top the list by far. Combining them, or at least two of the three, makes it even better! I love being home and working in my garden but the urge to see and experience something new is always bubbling to the top. I love the researching part of planning a trip almost as much as the actual experience. I also like the challenge of seeing what kind of deals I can get so money is left over for even more trips!
